The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed his determination to decisively confront remnants of terrorist groups operating in the North East region.

This resolve was expressed during his maiden operational assessment visit to the Headquarters of Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), from 6 to 7 November 2025, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a statement by the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the COAS commended the resilience, courage, and commitment of officers and men in sustaining relentless pressure against insurgents. He lauded the Theatre Command for adopting innovative approaches that have become game-changers in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

General Shaibu urged troops to intensify efforts toward ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region. He also emphasized his commitment to improving troops’ motivation, welfare, and sound administration across all theatres of operations nationwide, describing them as essential components for achieving operational success.

The Army Chief further reiterated his pledge to provide the Nigerian Army with the necessary capabilities and logistics to decisively degrade insurgents and restore enduring peace to the region.

As part of the visit, Lieutenant General Shaibu paid a courtesy call on the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Dr. Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, at his palace. He assured the royal father of the Army’s continued resolve to sustain offensive operations and deny terrorists freedom of action. He also appreciated the people of Borno and traditional institutions for their unwavering support and intelligence cooperation, which he described as vital to operational success.

In his remarks, the Shehu of Borno congratulated the COAS on his appointment, describing him as a dependable ally of the state. He commended the Army’s support during humanitarian crises, particularly the 2024 flood disaster, and pledged the continued cooperation of traditional institutions with the military and other security agencies.

During the visit, the COAS commissioned several welfare projects within Maimalari Cantonment, including the groundbreaking ceremony for 30 one-bedroom flats for corporals and below, and the OPHK Heroes Transit Accommodation — both initiated under the “Soldier First Concept” to enhance troops’ welfare and living conditions.

Other highlights of the visit included an inspection of the quarter guard, operational briefings, interactive sessions with senior officers, presentation of souvenirs, visits to hospitalized wounded personnel, and an inspection of critical combat enablers.

Lieutenant General Shaibu was accompanied by Principal Staff Officers from the Army Headquarters, as well as Sector and Component Commanders and Principal Staff Officers of Headquarters Theatre Command Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI and 7 Division Nigerian Army.
