The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reassured officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army of the institution’s unwavering commitment to national defence and ongoing security operations across the country.
The assurance was given at the COAS 2025 Christmas Carol of Nine Lessons held in Abuja, where the Army Chief was represented by the Director General, Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Major General Tariweriye Ebiowei Gagariga.
General Shaibu praised troops for their courage, professionalism, and sacrifices in defending Nigeria, noting that their efforts across various theatres of operation continue to enhance national unity, peace, and stability. He added that the entire nation remains grateful for their service.
He urged personnel to approach the Yuletide with gratitude and sober reflection, acknowledging both the gains and setbacks of the year, while appreciating God for the gift of life. The COAS further advised troops to celebrate responsibly and maintain discipline, alertness, and professionalism throughout the festive season.
“As we prepare to enter the New Year, let us celebrate with optimism but remain mindful of the responsibilities ahead,” he said, wishing all Army personnel a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2026.
In his sermon, the Director of Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic), Very Rev. Fr. Brigadier General Anthony Maimagani, centred his message on God’s unconditional love as expressed in John 3:16 and Matthew 5:45. He reminded worshippers that Christmas symbolizes peace, hope, and harmony, urging Christians to extend love, tolerance, and kindness irrespective of race, class, nationality, or background.
He also called for continuous prayers for Nigeria, the President and Commander-in-Chief, the Service Chiefs, and troops deployed in operational theatres, who sacrifice daily to keep the nation safe.
“As we celebrate, may the victorious Christ bring peace and harmony back to Nigeria,” he prayed.
The Carol of Nine Lessons featured scripture readings, hymns, and prayers for the nation, reinforcing the Army’s emphasis on unity, faith, and national stability during the festive season.
