Chief of the Air Staff Commends Strategic Partnership for Peace, Progress, and National DefenceThe Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has commended the Government of Akwa Ibom State for its unwavering commitment to national defence through the generous donation of land for the establishment of a barracks and Forward Operational Base.
The facility, to be sited in a strategic location within the South-South region, is expected to bolster Nigeria’s air power projection and maritime security operations across the coastal corridor of the Gulf of Guinea.
Air Marshal Abubakar gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, at Government House, Uyo.
In a statement by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Edosa Ejodame.The Chief of the Air Staff described the gesture by the Akwa Ibom State Government as “bold, timely, and patriotic,” noting that it would accelerate the development of critical operational infrastructure necessary for the effective deployment of air assets in the region.
He emphasized that the new base would not only strengthen national security and defence capability but also stimulate civil economic growth through enhanced investment, trade, and tourism.
“The Forward Operational Base, when established,” he stated, “will reassure both citizens and investors of the safety and security of lives and property.
This will entrench Akwa Ibom State as a preferred destination for investment and tourism in the Niger Delta and beyond.”
Air Marshal Abubakar further highlighted the significance of the collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and the Government of Akwa Ibom State, describing it as a model of responsible governance and intergovernmental synergy.
“Your Excellency,” he said to Governor Eno, “your proactive approach to issues of security and development speaks volumes. What we are building here goes beyond military presence it is a long-term investment in the peace, resilience, and prosperity of Nigeria.”
He also reiterated the Nigerian Air Force’s unshakable commitment to the safety and protection of all Nigerians, including the people of Akwa Ibom State.
He stressed that a stronger Nigerian Air Force presence in the South-South would complement existing security measures and increase confidence among local and international investors, particularly in light of persistent threats in the Gulf of Guinea such as piracy, oil theft, and transnational organised crime.
In his response, Governor Umo Bassey Eno welcomed the Chief of the Air Staff and expressed appreciation for the recognition accorded to the state. He described the visit as a confirmation of Akwa Ibom’s strategic value in Nigeria’s security architecture and affirmed the state’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian Air Force on all fronts.
“We believe that security is the foundation of every successful society,” the governor remarked. “That is why we are delighted to collaborate with the Nigerian Air Force to ensure that Akwa Ibom remains peaceful, secure, and open for development. We will continue to support every initiative that promotes national unity and progress.”
As part of the visit, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar also paid a courtesy call on the palace of His Royal Majesty, Obong Edidem Charles D. Abia, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (Attah Ekid Afid), the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area.
While addressing the traditional council, the Chief of the Air Staff acknowledged the indispensable role of traditional institutions in supporting the operations of security agencies.He noted that the cooperation of royal fathers remains vital in sustaining peace and fostering trust between communities and the military.
“Your Majesty,” he said, “we are grateful for your continued support. The Nigerian Air Force recognises the influence of traditional leaders and will continue to work closely with you to build lasting peace in our region.”
In his remarks, His Royal Majesty Obong Edidem Charles Abia praised the Nigerian Air Force for its growing presence and dedication to the safety of the region. He pledged the unwavering support of the traditional institution toward all security efforts.
“Together,” he said, “we will continue to strengthen the bonds of peace, development, and unity for the benefit of our people and the future of Nigeria.”
The visit marked a defining moment in the evolving partnership between the Nigerian Air Force and Akwa Ibom State Government one rooted in mutual respect, strategic foresight, and a shared commitment to advancing regional security, economic stability, and national development in the vital Gulf of Guinea theatre.
