CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF PRIORITIZES TROOPS’ WELFARE THROUGH AFFORDABLE POST-SERVICE HOUSING INITIATIVE

By Ruth Dabo

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi O. Oluyede, has reiterated his commitment to the welfare of Nigerian Army personnel through the implementation of affordable post-service housing schemes under the Post-Service Housing Development Limited (PHDL).

The COAS made this known through the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of PHDL, Major General Isaiah Allison, during a media parley with Defence Headquarters correspondents in Abuja, stated that the initiative is directly aligned with the COAS’s command philosophy of building a well-motivated, professionally responsive, and combat-ready force.

He explained that the housing initiative is designed to ensure that troops retire into homes they own, thereby eliminating the stress of securing accommodation after years of dedicated service.

According to him, such welfare-driven programs enhance morale, strengthen commitment, and contribute to operational effectiveness of personnel.

The flagship program of PHDL, tagged Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers, offers two-bedroom units at ₦7.8 million for corporals and below, and three-bedroom units at ₦8.5 million for sergeants and above in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s directive.

Although PHDL is a military institution, it is structured and operated with the professionalism of a civilian real estate firm. It has dedicated departments for surveying, engineering, quantity analysis, and auditing, with mobile monitoring teams deployed to ensure consistency and quality across all project sites.

Acting Public Relations Officer of PHDL, Lieutenant Augustina Nkeonye, emphasized that all projects and initiatives undertaken by the agency are executed under the Leadership and guidance of the COAS.

The post-service housing initiative remains a clear demonstration of the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to the welfare of troops ensuring that those who serve and defend the nation do not face housing uncertainty upon retirement.
