ABUJA – 13th JULY 2025
Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Retired Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has joined the nation and the international community in mourning the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his passing as the loss of one of Nigeria’s most principled and visionary leaders.
Reacting to the news of Buhari’s death at the age of 82 in London, Buratai expressed heartfelt grief, noting that the former President’s life was defined by unwavering commitment to national service, moral uprightness, and unshakable patriotism.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was not just a leader; he was a symbol of integrity, simplicity, and discipline. His passing signifies the end of an era anchored on strong values and nation-first leadership,” Buratai stated.
He recalled the pivotal moment in 2015 when President Buhari appointed him as Chief of Army Staff during one of Nigeria’s most challenging security periods. Buratai credited the President’s strategic foresight and support as instrumental in the military’s success in combating insurgency and restoring territorial integrity in the North-East.
“Under his leadership, we redefined the Nigerian Army. We reclaimed territories from Boko Haram and strengthened the fight against terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. These successes were made possible because President Buhari believed in the mission and gave us all the support we needed,” he said.
Buratai also referenced Buhari’s decision to appoint him as Ambassador to the Republic of Benin after his retirement from military service, describing it as a gesture that reaffirmed the President’s confidence in his capacity to serve the nation.
In his message, the former army chief extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Emir of Daura, the Government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, noting that the late President’s contributions would remain a guiding light for future generations.
“President Buhari’s legacy will live on. His example will continue to inspire leaders to put Nigeria above personal interest and to serve with honesty, discipline, and fear of God,” he added.
Buratai prayed for Almighty Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
