Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, GCON, has officially resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a decades-long association with the party he helped to establish.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, the former Vice President announced his decision to leave the party with immediate effect.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated, describing the move as a painful but necessary decision. “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was the party’s presidential flagbearer in two general elections, expressed gratitude to the PDP for the platform it provided him to serve the country. He described his time in the party as “one of the most significant chapters” of his life.
However, he lamented the current direction of the party, which he said no longer aligns with the core ideals upon which it was founded.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he said, adding that “irreconcilable differences” had made his continued stay untenable.
He concluded the letter by wishing the party and its leadership well in their future endeavors.
Although Atiku did not indicate his next political move, his resignation is expected to send ripples across the national political landscape as the 2027 general elections approach.
