The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that gunmen killed a civilian, identified as Rilwan Adekunle, inside a market within the Ojo Military Cantonment in Lagos.
In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the Army clarified that the incident did not occur within the cantonment premises as reported.
According to the statement, the Division received a distress call on 18 October 2025 concerning a shooting incident that took place near the Mammy Market abattoir gate junction, and not inside the cantonment. Preliminary investigations revealed that the tragic incident was linked to suspected cult-related activities, which resulted in the death of one person.
The Army’s standby response team arrived promptly at the scene and evacuated the victim to the Ojo Cantonment Medical Centre, being the nearest medical facility. Unfortunately, the victim was confirmed dead by medical personnel upon arrival.
Lieutenant Colonel Yahaya expressed the Army’s deep regret over the loss of life and extended condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.
He further urged members of the public and the media to verify information with the appropriate authorities before publication to avoid spreading misinformation that could cause unnecessary panic or misunderstanding.
