ARMY GRADUATES 60 PERSONNEL FROM LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COURSE

The two-week course, held at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC) in Abuja, was formally declared closed by the Chief of Training, Army, Major General Valentine Okoro, who was represented by the Deputy Chief of Training (Training Linkages and Integration), Major General Henry Yanet.

Major General Okoro praised the participants for their discipline, commitment and performance during the training, describing the programme as a strategic investment in producing adaptive, creative and emotionally intelligent leaders capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges. He urged the graduates to apply the knowledge gained to improve command responsibility, decision-making and troop management in their various units.

The Director General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, retired Major General James Myam, also congratulated the participants and emphasised the importance of leadership competence at the tactical level. He noted that modern military operations require critical thinking, teamwork, emotional intelligence and effective problem-solving—skills the course was deliberately designed to enhance. He expressed confidence that the graduates would return to their units as change agents, helping to strengthen leadership capacity across the Army.

Course Coordinator, Brigadier General Charles Onovwiona, explained that the sixty participants, drawn from the ranks of Private to Lieutenant Colonel across various formations and units, undertook modules covering leadership fundamentals, conflict management, inter-agency coordination, military justice, emotional intelligence, coaching and mentoring.

He added that two new topics effective parenting and parenting challenges for highly mobile military personnel were introduced for the first time to enrich the course content.

A tabletop exercise was conducted to assess participants’ understanding of the modules, and all sixty officers and soldiers were certified worthy in both character and learning.

Major General Okoro thanked the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shuaibu, for providing the resources that ensured the successful conduct of the programme. The ceremony concluded with the presentation of certificates to the graduating participants.
