The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to translating defence policies into concrete actions with the inauguration of three strategic committees aimed at strengthening national security and improving the welfare of military veterans.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Wednesday inaugurated the committees at the Ministry’s headquarters, Ship House, in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Enderline Chukwu, the Minister said the move underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to move beyond policy formulation to the practical implementation of strategies that address critical defence and security priorities.

The committees inaugurated include the Technical Committee on Integrated Border Security System, the Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan Committee, and the Committee on Veterans Welfare and Institutional Reform.

General Musa noted that the establishment of the committees reflects a coordinated effort to tackle evolving security challenges, enhance operational readiness, and ensure that retired personnel receive the recognition and support they deserve.

On border security, the Minister stressed the need for a coordinated, intelligence-driven, and technology-enabled system to manage Nigeria’s vast land and maritime boundaries. He tasked the committee to review existing frameworks, identify gaps, and propose integrated solutions that will enhance inter-agency collaboration and real-time information sharing.

Addressing the Defence Sector Capital Requirements Plan Committee, he highlighted the importance of long-term investment planning, directing members to develop a comprehensive 5 to 10-year capital framework. According to him, the plan must assess current infrastructure, identify capability gaps, and align future investments with emerging threats and technological advancements.

On veterans’ welfare, General Musa emphasized the need to preserve the dignity and well-being of former service members. He said the committee would work to strengthen welfare systems, improve access to support services, and develop a standardized national dress code for veterans to promote uniformity and align with global best practices.

The Minister urged members of the committees to carry out their assignments with professionalism, transparency, and accountability, noting that stakeholder engagement and value for money would be critical to achieving practical and implementable outcomes.

All three committees have been given one month to submit comprehensive reports with actionable recommendations and clear implementation roadmaps. The Ministry assured them of full support in the execution of their mandates.

The initiative, according to the Ministry, represents a significant step in modernising Nigeria’s defence architecture, enhancing institutional coordination, and strengthening national resilience.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Richard Pheelangwah, commended the Minister for his commitment to advancing national security and improving the welfare of personnel and veterans. He urged members of the committees to approach their assignments with patriotism and a strong sense of duty.
