Nigeria’s newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), has assumed office with a firm pledge to strengthen national security through improved military welfare, enhanced joint operations, and strict accountability across the defence sector.

Speaking at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Abuja, the former Chief of Defence Staff said his priority is to translate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s confidence in his leadership into measurable security results. He stressed that Nigeria’s challenges must be confronted collectively, adding that “no single service or individual can achieve success alone.”

General Musa said the Ministry will immediately begin a rigorous review of all theatre commands, equipment needs, training, welfare systems and inter-service coordination, emphasising that welfare is a strategic requirement, not an administrative routine. He promised prompt payment of allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and stronger support for injured personnel and families of fallen heroes.

The Minister also committed to zero tolerance for corruption and indiscipline, insisting that the Ministry must operate with professionalism, urgency and respect for human rights. He said technology, intelligence and data-driven decisions will define Nigeria’s defence posture going forward.

General Musa described his new role as a continuation of decades of service, noting that the safety of troops remains central to his agenda. “Those who risk their lives for Nigeria deserve nothing but the utmost respect,” he said.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, assured the Minister of the full cooperation of the Armed Forces, noting that Musa’s return would strengthen coordination and bolster public confidence in military operations.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Richard Pheelangwa, welcomed the Minister and reaffirmed the commitment of the management and staff to supporting his leadership. He noted that Musa’s experience as a frontline commander and former CDS positions him to drive reforms and reinforce Nigeria’s defence architecture.

General Musa said the road ahead will be demanding but achievable, adding that the Ministry is determined to deliver results that will restore security, enable farmers and children to return to their livelihoods, and protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
