Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have arrested two herders for allegedly trespassing and destroying crops on community farmlands in Makurdi, Benue State, as part of ongoing efforts to protect farmers and ensure food security during the peak harvest season.
According to a statement issued by the Headquarters Joint Task Force OPWS and signed by Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the incident occurred on 20 November 2025 when troops deployed at Zongo Akiki were on a routine farm-protection patrol. The troops intercepted the herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands owned by local residents, causing significant crop damage.
The proactive response of the troops prevented further destruction and a potential clash between the herders and the affected farmers. The suspects are currently in custody for further investigation and appropriate legal action.

The Force Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to avoid taking the law into their hands when dealing with disputes. He stressed that violence and reprisals only escalate tensions and undermine peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara further cautioned herders to abide by the law and refrain from actions that threaten security and disrupt community harmony. He reaffirmed OPWS’s unwavering commitment to protecting farmlands and ensuring a safe environment for all lawful economic activities to flourish.
