The Headquarters, 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, has provided clarification regarding an incident involving a soldier and a suspected criminal at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State, on 13 October 2025.

In a statement issued by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade Asaba, Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, it was disclosed that the confrontation resulted in the death of a suspected criminal who engaged a soldier on lawful duty in a violent scuffle. The soldier reportedly acted in self-defence.

According to the statement, the incident occurred when the soldier, while manning the DMLT Estate gate, intercepted a group of individuals attempting to force their way into the premises without undergoing the mandatory security checks. Upon questioning their purpose and identities, the individuals became aggressive and violent.

The situation quickly escalated into a physical altercation, during which the soldier, in a bid to defend himself, applied self-defence measures that left one of the individuals injured. The injured suspect was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead.

Captain Bawa-Rijau further stated that the Otu-Jeremi Police Division in Delta State was promptly informed of the development and has since commenced necessary investigations.

The Brigade reassured residents of Delta State of its commitment to maintaining peace, order, and respect for human rights while carrying out its statutory duties. It also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security personnel, and adhere to laid-down procedures during security checks to prevent similar incidents in the future.
